Created by scientists working in collaboration around the world, the project is known as the Human Cognition Project. The goal is to create accessible, simple ways that the everyday person can improve their brain function without investing in expensive software or books. This is done in the form of games and activities that are set out in a “personal training program”.

When you first sign up, you’ll be asked to select which skills you’d most like to work on. These come from a range of general areas such as memory, attention, speed, flexibility and problem solving, and are divided into more specific skillsets such as associating names with faces or remembering patterns and locations. The idea is to apply brain skills and cognitive improvement with real-life applications that will be useful to you. Once you’ve selected the skills that you want to master, Lumosity will automatically create daily “workouts” with exercises designed to challenge each function.

Lumosity is available for a range of devices including iOS, so it’s easy to take with you and complete on the go. You can also complete all the tasks online, so you don’t need to invest in expensive books or materials, or download any software. With 60 million people using it, its proven to be a popular tool. The more people use it, the more scientists are able to refine the product and make it more and more accurate and useful. They also publish their findings and studies for other academic institutions to use and benefit from, so it’s an ongoing collaborative project.

Lumosity is a great way to actively measure the brain training you are doing, as it provides not only exercises but measurable progress and ways to track the results.

One of the most popular genres of TV shows across multiple audiences is brain games or knowledge quiz shows. In these, a contestant is putting their mental acumen and knowledge to the test for money or prizes – but the real enjoyment comes in the audience being able to participate and say “see, I knew that!” As well as being entertaining, these shows are genuinely educational – providing facts and figures in a format that makes them easier to remember and absorb, because you’ll also remember the context of the show. It’s a fun competition for the family, and the questions have usually been researched by experts and come from a variety of backgrounds.

The Chase. A quick-fire style quiz show in which the contestant is matched up against a general knowledge expert, with a specialty in a particular subject. They both answer the same set of questions, and the more the contestant gets right, the closer they get to the prize. However this is also true of the expert “chaser”, and if they overtake them up the scoreboard then the contestant is out.

QI. A panel show hosted by Stephen Fry, the title stands for “Quite Interesting” which is what it aspires to be. Rather than being a focused, serious quiz show, it’s more light hearted and interested in discovering the weird and wonderful. It tends to look at topics that people have a lot of assumptions about, and challenges these assumptions, so it’s a great way of broadening your knowledge. There isn’t any kind of scoring system that makes sense, but as it’s always panelled by British comedians it’s more about the entertainment value than a fierce competition.

Who Wants To Be A Millionaire. The absolute classic quiz show, and one of the longest-running with different versions in countries all around the world. The basic format is simple, with questions that get harder as the quiz goes on, but are progressively worth more and more money. It draws on a wide range of subjects from history to pop culture, and there are even spinoff versions that emphasize the game show aspect and set rapid fire questions.

Television brain games let you test your general knowledge against a team of experts who have researched and compiled questions designed to be a challenge but not impossible. The more you watch, the more information you will absorb.

They’re designed to test and stretch different functions, and when done every day add up to continued improvement and development of the mind. Though you can buy them in books, these can be difficult to take on the go and can only be done once. On the other hand, online brain games can be accessed through tablets or other mobile devices and completed anywhere. There are a huge range available, including different puzzles and tests.

Simon Says. A small memory and reactions test, requiring you to hit the buttons in the same order as the computer. There are many different levels with increasing difficulty, so you can try back each day to see if you have improved.

Memory. As the name implies, this game tests your ability to memorise the order of cards. Click on the different cards to reveal them, with the aim of making pairs. Requires visualisation and short term memory.

Hit-The-Dot. Hit a randomly generated dot as many times as you can in 30 seconds. This tests your reaction times as well as your hand-eye co-ordination. You gain a point for each one you hit, and lose one for each time you miss.

Face Memory. After being shown a randomly generated face, you’re given the parts to try and rebuild it again. There are many possible combinations, and you receive more points for being more accurate.

Towers of Hanoi. Move disks one at a time from one pole onto another – however a bigger disk cannot go on a smaller disk. There are multiple solutions, so you can repeat the game to try and find the most efficient one.

Playing online brain games every day builds up different mental faculties over time.
